This was my first novel. It was written at a time when South African novelists writing books for teenagers seldom bucked the system and tackled subjects like a young white boy falling in love with a "coloured" girl. In doing so I was joining the few writers who were trampling on holy ground without taking their shoes off.
The first words of the reader considering it for publication were: "This is dynamite!" I got two offers of publication within a week and I became an author!
Down Street subsequently won the MER Prize for Youth Literature.
